Where is my tuition money going?
Perhaps you are considering coming to KBC and desire to know what your tuition covers. This is a completely valid question. To begin with, living expenses are quite high here on Kauai; on an average low-end of the scale it costs about $1000/ month to rent a small apartment (for rental statistics, click here). This may or may not include electricity and utility bills which can get quite expensive- up to $43/ kilowatt hour!
Next, factor in at least $200-300/ month for food while on the island. Kauai’s food can be quite expensive if you are not buying in bulk from a place like Costco (for example, milk is usually around $4-5/ gal). This obviously does not even include an education or books! A low ball figure for living expenses on Kauai averages out to be around $1300/ month. Multiply this by 4 months (which is about how long one would be at KBC for a semester) and you have racked up a bill that’s about $5,200 to simply stay for just 4 months! Crazy! Of course at KBC our students live in tents and thrive in a bit more of a primitive scene, but tuition with all that it includes, is quite cheap in comparison to normally living on the island.
So how can we offer a unique island experience coupled with an education for $3,700?
Firstly, we have quite a rustic and self contained living situation at KBC, which includes solar and battery powered outlets, our own private water well and solar heated showers. This drastically reduces our overhead monthly costs and allows us to stay a bit more “off the map” financially. We also shop in bulk and attend local fruit markets in order to get decent prices on our food. Finally, we have been blessed by Calvary Chapel Kauai who allows us to stay on their church acreage for minimal costs.
Below is a list of the larger overhead costs to run the college (this is where the majority of tuition goes):
-Logo’s Bible Software, books, etc
-Propane for refrigerator, freezer and cooking uses
-Porta-Potty bi-weekly pumping
-Student/ staff weekly food and drinking water
-Staff/ Teacher Payroll
-Various student activities throughout the semester
-Internet/ printing/ media
-CCBC Murrieta Student Fee’s
-Populi, our Admissions/ College Management online system
-Campus facilities maintenance and upkeep (things rust and disintegrate in Kauai quickly)
-KBC Savings and emergency funds
