We have just finished a great and yet challenging semester. We had many victories in the Lord this year and just wanted to recap on a few:

1. At different points throughout the semester, Christ’s work and glory therefrom were present and clear before us. Sometimes this was seen in and/ or after a hard circumstance. Sometimes we saw Jesus in our leisure time. At other points we experienced God in a real way through His people and their care for us. Needless to say, we can say that almost all of us got to know Christ and His personage a little bit better this semester!

2. Kauai Bible College has been living in the “black” the last 2 semesters thanks to generous donations last semester and incoming students tuition. This has freed us up to maintain the campus more regularly and actually have a decent payroll for our teachers and staff. The Lord has had favor on the school’s finances this year!

3. We have had two great semesters of amazing young men and women who have grown in the grace of Jesus Christ throughout those months of attending KBC. They have all hung in there with the rustic and communal living, which says a lot about their growing character!

4. The staff and students have had a great impact on the surrounding community, both in believers and unbelievers lives. Numerous unbelievers came to know Christ at various opportunities that were presented to them for evangelism! I also believe the church members were encouraged by the students presence, unity and hunger for God.

5. The church body at Calvary Chapel Kauai lovingly “hanaied” or adopted each student. They invited them over for dinner, let them do laundry and just involved them in their busy lives. The students were impacted by their love and hospitality and we are so thankful to those families who participated!

6. KBC has progressed in many of its smaller goals such as building a kitchen and forming a missionary fund. There are numerous other short term visions that have been fulfilled in the last year that, as I look back, were great things to see come to pass. In the Lord’s time He often makes haste!

Thank you all for your prayer’s for this school and your heart towards us as students and staff. Please continue to pray for next semesters new and returning students- that they would know the love of Christ which surpasses all understanding and be drawn in by His Spirit. Some insights on fear:

a. Fear begins in the mind

b. Fear is vision without optimism: you can see down the road but you are negative about it

c. Our fears might seem rational but they often aren’t. However, fears are always rational to the people who have them

d. Anything in life is something that could potentially produce fear based anxiety.

What fear is about:

1. Not getting what we want. For example: “I want to get married, but I don’t think Im going to…” or the answer is “no” and the fear comes in

2. Getting what we want and losing it. Example: you are married and get divorced -we obtain something and get scared that we might lose it

3. Getting what you don’t want, for example: getting cancer

4. Fear reveals our values, loves, priorities and longings -You only fear losing what you love, you only fear getting what you hate. It reveals what is essential and primary to you.

5. Fear increases with more freedom, more choices= more potential to get it wrong. Example: who am I going to marry- theres a lot people on the earth.

6. Fear is NOT always sinful. For example, a fathers son goes off to war or a mothers fear of her child getting hurt

7. Fear often turns us into false prophets (those who predict the future wrongly): you freak out and talk about things that actually don’t end up happening -you will freak out until it doesn’t happen

Fear manifests itself mainly in the form of ANXIETY: anxiousness which causes no sleep and other physical problems- people are so afraid of not having control that they cant take a break! When does your body MANIFEST ANXIETY? Fear in the mind always results in anxiety in the body. A person can usually choose one of two ways to react to their fears: either in RUNNINING OR FIGHTING. Fighting often times looks like “Im gonna work harder” and running is simply a retreat from circumstances and people. The reality is that Jesus does not want you to be anxious because it will hurt yourself. If you are ruled by your fears and anxieties you will die sooner! The truth is that every one of us has fear, yet this now becomes a matter of looking at fear as an opportunity to run to or away from God for your help.

How to overcome:

-Jesus talks about these things sympathetically and He is not far from us! His Word reveals these very things

-Look at to Christ- Jesus had the greatest fears! He was going to go to the cross and endure the wrath of God. Jesus works this through with the Father, for example in the garden of Gethsemaine. Jesus understand what its like to suffer.

-Jesus is not just a spiritual guru who doesn’t understand our suffering, He can completely sympathize with your situation and desires to give you peace as you come to Him.

-Jesus desires to redirect us from ourselves to God and others: if you worship Him, He will preserve you and alleviate much of your fear!

At around 10pm the sirens sounded and the whole island began to be in a small uproar. AT&T’s cell phone service shut down for many of us and people were flooding the gas stations filling up in preparation for the incoming wall of water. The traffic was backed up and many were wondering how this would, once again, pan out- would it be like last February’s tsunami scare that ended in a very small increase in water? Even though the safari tents for the Bible College are outside of the planned tsunami evacuation area, we decided to move to higher ground anyway. We proceeded to move the guys to the Calvary Chapel Kauai church tent on the hill which is about 50 feet higher than the safari tents, and the girls went to Pastor Bruce and other hani-families houses for the night.

After finding the staff and students situated in their rightful places, most of us fell asleep before 3am when the tsunami finally hit. In the morning there was no real major damage nor any floods of raging water. The only flood that came was one of texts and phone calls from caring family members and friends on the mainland who were interested in what was pending on our little island (thanks for the love and care, BTW). All in all, the waves didn’t immediately cause major damage, however, water did rush up onto roadways and into hotel lobbies on the Big Island and low-lying areas in Maui where 7-foot waves crashed ashore. Overall, it proved to be another eventful and exciting evening and morning on our little island in the pacific. Thanks to you all for praying and thinking about us!
