Making Disciples of Jesus, Semester by Semester.

Bike Trip Update

Hey Guys,

I know that we haven't posted on the blog in awhile but here is a little update on what's been going on. We now have a final list of those who are actually going to be riding on the trip: Luke Elkins came up with the idea for the trip and will be leading and organizing it, Curtis Zeigler committed to go in February 2010 and will be teaching and discipling others throughout the trip, and Michael Schulz AKA "Schwompty" committed in October 2009 and will be witnessing and leading small groups along the trip and at the churches that we visit.

We also have at least one person who has committed to drive the trip and carry the riders gear. His name is Alex Morrow and he will be driving the support car, helping to set up camp each night, leading worship whenever possible and also doing a lot of filming and video editing. There is another potential driver, Chris King, who is really praying about whether or not the Lord is guiding him to go. If the Lord leads him to go, he is another awesome teacher and leader who can really be a huge benefit to our team. Please pray that God would reveal His will to Chris concerning this trip and also provide for all of the other members of this trip.

Also, we are asking that anyone who is interested in receiving more information about the trip please provide their physical address and other contact information in the form below so that we can send some more details about the trip and also some information about how you can become involved through prayer or gifting.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and we would really appreciate it if you would continue to keep us in your prayers.

A KBC RECIPE FOR YOU

How to make a "KBC Nori Wrap"

- First you need to cook your brown rice
- Then you warm up your spinach tortilla
- Now you dip the Nori sheet in water (Nori is a thin sheet of seaweed)
- Place the Nori sheet on your open tortilla
- OK, now you are ready to add all your ingredients to your Nori wrap
-Add brown rice (at this point you need to put a little Soy Sauce on the rice)
-Add Wasabi cream sauce (mayonnaise with wasabi and a little rice vinegar)
-Add Wild Pacific Albacore Tuna or sauteed shrimp
-Add sliced fresh Avocado
-Add shredded carrot
- Now you wrap it up like a burrito (but in reality it's more like a giant Sushi Roll)

We make these for the students and staff here at the Kauai Bible College and they love them.
The Nori Wrap is a healthy and delicious example of what people eat here in the islands.

Three KBC Observances

Hi, my name is Chris King and I am currently the dean of men at Kauai Bible College. Id like to take a moment and share a few things I've experienced and taken note of in the past few years of working with young adults. The following observances are mainly from my interactions with young men and women in a fairly closed and controlled environment (i.e.: Bible College and University experiences). I’m sure there are differences among cultures, people, traditions, etc, along with other variables that come into play, so please take these observances with a grain of salt keeping an objective perspective in mind.

Observance Number One
The Derivation of Value and Relationships
Where does a young person’s sense of value come from? Perhaps I am hitting on more of an objective truth here, but many of these young adults are quite driven by relationships and their involvement in them. This includes both male-male, female-female, and male-female interaction. These are excellent things. However, I want to halt for a moment at the male-female interaction. I have noticed that there is a huge lack in the ability to make sound judgments when it comes to time spent and intimacy initiated with those of the opposite sex (I by no means disqualify myself from this, as I am painfully learning along the way). We seem to live in a time where we have the idea that even the lines of emotional intimacy are not to be drawn. Now, I suppose there is less violence observed if a young man has intentions for a woman and begins pursuing her, while calling it for what it is from the get go. However, I have been hearing more and more of this term: “we are just friends….nothing more, don’t worry”. This is, in my opinion, is playing with fire- especially if the “friendship” progresses with at least one or more of the parties ending up in some sort of pain that could have been avoided. Simply put, I believe much of this type of behavior stems from a lack of finding true identity and satisfaction in the person of Jesus Christ. Instead of deriving value from a true relationship with Christ, one is left to find his or her value in uncommitted emotional intimacy with the “friend”. Now, I do not say that friendship with the opposite sex (in moderation with good judgment) is bad; I am merely stating that there needs to be more awareness and addressing of the danger of uncommitted heart and emotional intimacy.

Observance Number Two
That Christianity is solely about good vs. bad
Although there is a natural moral disposition innately within us (Romans 1, 2) and also a system of moral actions that pertain to Old Testament law that is included in the Bible (Exodus, Leviticus), our Christian life is not solely built upon these. I often hear statements such as “oh, it’s just the right thing to do…” or “I’m working at getting better at that area of my life.” Don’t get me wrong, I am all about the ongoing work of being perfected by the activity of the Holy Spirit and intimacy with Jesus. But this is precisely the point: “…by the work of the Holy Spirit and intimacy with Jesus”. I am concerned when Christianity is reduced merely to a set of moral codes we live our lives by. Correct me if I am wrong, but Christ (the God-man) did not live and die exclusively so that His followers would only have a decent set of parameters for living a “good” life. Christ died so that He might have a bride- lovers- those who would enjoy a thriving and vibrant relationship with Him by progressing trust in Him. Here at KBC I have had (and am having) the privilege of sharing with young this intimate walk with the Holy Spirit and I’ve been seeing ongoing results. Young boys are growing into mature men who know how to discern God’s voice and follow after Him rather than the world or tradition. Not too long ago the Lord placed it on my heart to be in continual prayer for a young man with the gift of evangelism. As I have seen his relationship with Christ nurtured in just a couple months, the results were incredible; two young people saved, numerous other displays of fruit such as love for people, service and periods of fasting for others. Many of us already know that the fundamental theme of Christianity is relationship with God that results in numerous “by-products” such as peace, power, gentleness, (etc) and this is precisely what we aim to do here at KBC. Let us not eliminate or even begin to forget Christ’s prayer of unity for His disciples as found in John 17: “that they may be as one as We (the Father and Christ) are one”.

Observance Number Three
Boys will be boys
The last point that I will aim to make is this: it must be hard to be a parent and raise a child up in the fear of the Lord. I am getting a little taste of it from semester to semester and can barely imagine what bearing with a youngster for years and years is like, especially when it comes to discipline. I am so grateful that our Heavenly Father does the same for us, even when we deny Him for years and months at a time! How longsuffering is our Lord!

A glimps of KBC food

This week in the KBC kitchen the students ate some great food.

Monday breakfast was egg and cheese burritos wrapped in whole wheat tortillas. Also strawberry yogurt,
and fresh Island fruit were set out.

For lunch on Tuesday we had Asian chicken salad with
Honey Crisp apples and locally grown bananas.

On Wednesday evening for dinner our cooks created
a beautiful Thia style Chicken with a peanut-curry sauce.
They served the chicken over a bed of noodles with
sugar snap peas and sauteed carrots.

The Lord our God has blessed mankind
with such an assortment of amazing
flavors we can enjoy! Praise Him!

The Prosperity Gospel of Conservative Evangelicals

I (Josh) loved this article when I read it earlier today. I have not read any of her other posts, so I can't vouch for her orthodoxy, but this is excellent.

Wendy, from the "Practical Theology for Women" blog wrote:

If I know one, I know 50 godly, beautiful Christian women whose lives do NOT exceed their youthful expectations. These are the girls that were raised in youth group and went to Bible college to find a godly pastor to marry. They worked at various Christian ministries whenever the opportunities opened up. They studied careers that would facilitate their service to Christ. Some of them started this process in youth group. Others jumped on the "good choices" bandwagon later in life. These ladies rebelled in their youth, but at some point in their twenties, they came to Christ. They found a good church hoping to meet the right guy. Maybe they did marry the guy that on paper looked like the right choice. They tried to have a biblical view of marriage and family. But at some point, their reality reveals to them that they attached expectations to these good choices that are not being met. "Um, life isn't particularly easy compared to my friends who screwed everything up." Isn't the whole point of obeying in youth group and marrying a good guy you met at Bible college that you want to save yourself from the heartache of life? That's what I was taught.

I had a conversation about this very thing with one such friend. She told me we often confuse wisdom with gospel promises. Making wise choices that are obedient to Scriptural guidelines is exactly what we should do. Thank God for youth groups and Bible colleges that teach Scriptural wisdom. But our downfall in evangelical circles is that we feel we have to attach an expectation of good earthly outcome to these instructions if we want anyone to obey them.

Who would choose wisdom if they aren't assured a good outcome? There are two issues. First, there certainly is Biblical assurance of good outcomes to obedience. But God defines good differently than we do. And God's good in this life is tied very much to our sanctification and transformation to be like Christ. The process of rooting out our sin and replacing it with Christlikeness is never easy. It's always hard. But it is very good.

Second, we discount how much of God's good is rooted in eternity. I was struck by this when I worked through the book of Ephesians in depth last year. Paul emphasizes again and again what's going on "in the heavenly places" (Eph. 1:20, 2:6, 3:10, 6:12). For much of my life, I valued obedience because of what I thought it would do for me in this life. Now I'm coming to understand that obedience is much more about giving testimony of God's worth in the heavenly realm. When I obey in endurance through the pain even though I don't perceive earthy benefit to it--when I obey simply because God Himself is worth obedience--THAT'S the moment that Satan is silenced and I am transformed.

Of course, much of this can only really be learned through the marathon of life's personal experience. But I am burdened that those teaching youth and young adults do a disservice if we aren't honest about what you can and cannot expect as results for wise choices. Certainly, we save ourselves some measure of heartache if we don't marry porno guy preying on us at the bar. But that choice doesn't spare us of the heartache of spending another Christmas by ourselves without a family of our own while porno guy takes the next girl he found to Vegas for the holidays. Don't confuse wisdom with gospel promises. The reason we choose wisdom and endure the results even when they result in prolonged heartache is that we have secure gospel promises for what is happening in the heavenly places, outside our line of sight, promising joy for eternity. God is working for your good. And His definition of good is much better than yours. But He does define it differently. Much of our growth in Christ is simply when we start to define good the way God does in light of eternity.

*KBC Weather*

Friday, Dec. 4th. A very large northwest swell is expected to arrive on Saturday with an even larger one on Monday, with both events expected to produce warning level surf. Wow, wow. Today in Kapaa(the little town our Bible College is in) the weather is absolutely perfect. The ocean has a slight off-shore breeze which makes for a glassy smooth ocean surface. If you were going to choose a day to take some beach pictures, this would be it!!!

Last night after bed time(12am) the moon was so bright and majestic you couldn't help but lay in your tent and just gaze out at the lit-up stars and sky through the little window screen. No head lights needed on a beautiful night like last night. You could read your Bible to emerald blue moon beams as long as your heart desired.

"Praise ye Him, sun and moon: praise Him, all ye stars of light. Praise Him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the LORD: for He commanded, and they were created." Psalm 148:3-5

Surfs up

Nov. 29th Here in Kauai we are in the prime time for surfing. Currently on the north shore we are seeing 8 to 10 foot waves. And for those who don't surf, the weather is great on the whole island, so a day spent on the beach with your Bible and some cold drinks is looking like your best bet. Bright green mountains and clear blue water. Praise God!

KBC TourDeAmerica

In the summer of 2007 a few friends mentioned the idea of a bicycle trip across America. I thought it would be a great adventure but never actually thought it would come to pass. I had always had a desire to ride a bike some great distance with a bunch of friends and camp along the way. Well that idea was tucked into the back of my mind and almost forgotten until a few of the students at Kauai Bible College mentioned the same idea during the spring 2009 semester. I realized that I still had a strong desire to make this epic trip! We never got any farther then just talking about the trip.

Summer 2009 brought a good amount of down time and a lot of time to just think and seek the Lord on things. The idea of this trip kept popping into my head but now the Lord was changing my mindset on the trip. Missions were something I suddenly wanted to incorporate into the expedition. I couldn’t get this idea out of my head.

Later I came into a concept that relates to finding the will of God. This is kind of how it went. God gives us desires and passions and wants us to grow in those areas. He also gives us gifts that should be used for his glory and to further his kingdom. I have a desire to use those gifts and passions for His glory. I just didn’t know how to find God’s will on how He would like me to use those gifts and passions. I realized that I had spent way too much time waiting on God to move and show me his will. How much did I miss out on while waiting? I feel as though I missed out on a lot! So I started changing my perspective on finding the will of God for my life and in simple terms it can be summarized in this phrase. “ Just do something” I believe that God will allow us to try things out and if it is not what he wants us to do he will close the door and you will have a lack of peace in what u are trying.

I applied this concept to the idea of a bike trip across America. Why not try it and move forward on it and see what the Lord will do with it. Well, I did just that and the things that have happened have shown me that the Lord is in this and is moving in amazing ways. I wish I had time to tell you of all the things He has been doing but I would be here typing to you for a long time! In the end there is no doubt at all in my mind and heart that the lord is in this and is actually pushing us forward. He has provided some financial support, my road bike for the trip, a road bike for the first committed rider, the support of Calvary Chapel Kauai, the support of Kauai Bible College, a rout we will travel, and many other things! So we are setting out on this great adventure in the name of Jesus!!

Our mission on this trip is to take the command of the Lord. Matthew 28:19 (19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations). We will be presenting tools to use, new ideas and testimonies of how our lives have been changed by this command. Personal discipleship seems to be something that is somewhat overlooked in our churches today. Our goal is to instill a discipleship excitement in people and in the churches and schools they are a part of. We want to encourage people to make disciples and to come along side friends and family. We also desire to encourage people in developing a stronger personal relationship with our savior Jesus Christ.
